The Challenges
Defining Zones in an Open-Plan Layout: The open-plan design called for distinct lighting zones to separate the living, dining, and kitchen areas without disrupting the overall flow. Pendant lights over the kitchen island provided task lighting, while recessed and accent lighting defined other areas.
Managing Natural Light and Artificial Illumination: The abundance of natural light needed to be balanced with artificial lighting to manage glare and maintain consistency throughout the day. Dimmable lights and automated controls were used alongside sheer curtains or blinds to soften daylight as needed.
Highlighting Architectural Features: Architectural elements like spiral staircases, curved walls, and unique windows were highlighted using a mix of uplighting, downlighting, and grazing techniques. Integrated lighting within the staircase and strategically placed wall sconces enhanced these features without overwhelming them.
Ensuring Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Lighting Transitions: The transition between indoor and outdoor spaces was designed to feel seamless. The interior lighting scheme was extended outdoors with complementary landscape, path, and architectural lighting.
Energy Efficiency: Energy efficiency was prioritised by using LED lighting throughout the home. Motion sensors and smart controls were also incorporated to optimise energy usage without compromising on functionality.
